Bedroom makeover, part 3.

by Amy on March 14, 2011 in Projects

I’ve been distracted by other things recently (like my brother’s visit) but the bedroom makeover is still plugging along. Remember my original punch list? Well, here’s where things stand now:

  • Buy a rug for the floor (to cover up the awful laminate)  DONE!
  • Get a new sheepskin rug for one side of bed  DONE!
  • Cover the headboard in a different fabric  (after painting the wall darker, I decided that I like the headboard as it is.)
  • Change out the bedding   DONE!
  • Sew a cover for the long body pillow on the bed  (Need to choose fabric)
  • Paint the wall behind the bed in a darker accent color  DONE!
  • Touch up or repaint the white walls   DONE!
  • Hang some pictures on the accent wall   DONE!
  • Install the long clothes rail in this bedroom (it’s currently in the other room)   DONE!
  • Install new closet system and move Joel’s clothes into the closet   DONE!
  • Get pretty baskets to go in the nightstands   DONE!
  • Make new blackout shades for the windows  (Need to make final decision on fabric)
  • Wash the disgustingly dirty windows    DONE!
  • Order new window screens   DONE!
  • Caulk around the ceiling fan   DONE!
  • Set up a phone charging station on the nightstand    DONE!
  • Rip up the laminate floor and replace with ceramic tile to match rest of house  (We decided not to attempt this right now…)
  • Install new baseboards to match the rest of the house (Will work on this later — maybe next year.)

Only two projects left to work on!

Here’s the view of our room from the hallway. I love the new rug — I’m not usually a fan of patterns, but for some reason I love them on the floor. You can see the clothes rod on the right — we aren’t always tidy, so having somewhere to quickly hang up our clothes is great for keeping the whole room from turning into a laundry heap (most of the time, anyway). The windows are still crying out for new shades.

And here’s the new wall color, along with a few other changes. I decided to keep the wall art simple, and just hung up an old photo of Paris that we’ve had for ages. But since we live in earthquake country, I took it to the frame shop for an overhaul first — we had the frame reinforced, the glass replaced with plexiglass, and then we hung it on a special earthquake hook so that it can’t bounce off the wall.

The bedding isn’t new, just stuff we already had. I still need to decide on an accent fabric to cover the long body pillow, which should pull everything together. I also splashed out on some new accessories for the nightstands and a new radio. And Joel and I switched sides of the bed, for about the tenth time. So he gets the new sheepskin rug and easier access to the closet in the morning while I’m still asleep. ;-)

I’m really liking the play of textures in here. The room actually feels a little larger than it did before when it was just a white box. Now I just have to make a trip to the fabric store to make final decisions on the last two projects and this room will be done!

It looks great! I am definitely going to have to look into getting a clothes rod like that – we would get some great use out of it!

Yeah, that’s one of the best things I’ve installed in our bedroom! I’ll take some better photos of it for my final post. It’s just a glorified coat rack. ;-)

This is beautiful. I love the gray with the warm wood of your nightstands. I would have never in a million years thought of putting a sheepskin rug on top of another rug, but it looks fabulous – love the textures together! And done it all while making a baby. Wow! Great job.

Jess, thanks so much! It feels good to get *something* done… the rest of my house feels so unfinished!
